Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA) is a minimally invasive sperm retrieval procedure used for men with obstructive azoospermia. In this condition, sperm production is normal, but a blockage prevents sperm from reaching the ejaculate.
During the procedure, a fertility specialist uses a fine needle to retrieve sperm directly from the epididymis, where sperm mature and are stored. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia and is coordinated with the female partner’s egg retrieval when IVF or ICSI treatment is planned.
PESA is commonly recommended for men who have undergone a vasectomy, have congenital absence of the vas deferens, or have blockages caused by infection, injury, or previous surgery.
