Myth 1: Babies born with IVF are not normal.
This is not true. The risk of abnormal fetus & birth defects in IVF is same as in general population. People think that IVF babies are artificially designed in IVF laboratories.
But the fact is that doctors are not making babies but assisting couples who are facing issues in conceiving naturally to have a child. The fertilization of egg by sperm occur outside the body in lab, but the embryo (fertilized egg) is transferred back into female’s uterus where it grows into a baby. The process is very natural & so an IVF baby is normal baby.
Myth 2: IVF is not safe.
Rather IVF is well monitored, controlled & quite a safe procedure with very less number of complications. Ovarian Hyper-stimulation Syndrome which can cause weight gain or abdominal distension or there might be some minor bleeding during egg retrieval are few of the complications. But above mentioned complications are minimal after use of latest injections protocol.
Myth 3: You can always have babies with IVF even if you start your family as late as 40 or more than 40 years.
This is not all true. As woman ages her fertility declines especially after 35yrs of age. While IVF is still a good option for women with more than 35 years, it is not always guaranteed. IVF actually makes good use of available viable eggs found in advanced age group female, but the success will depend on quality of eggs which were retrieved which diminishes with age. There is increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities in advanced age.
Myth 4: Patients needs to be admitted in hospital for IVF.
Patient needs to be admitted for 1 day on the day of egg retrieval, but not more than that. For embryo transfer, the procedure takes 10-15 min. after which patient needs to rest for few hours & that’s it. You don’t have to get admitted for a couple of days.
